SAE_AERO DESIGN

The primary goal of the SAE Aero Design competition is to present undergraduate and graduate engineering students with a practical engineering challenge. The competition is meticulously crafted to offer participants exposure to the types of scenarios and challenges that engineers commonly encounter in their professional work environments.

I was invited to briefly collaborate with them because they needed help in the manufacture of the wings. I was presented with two long, infinite screws and had to create some sort of support for the wings. What we ended up doing was creating DXF layouts of the selected NACA airfoil and cutting them using laser machines. We spaced them out throughout the wingspan and in between, filling them with high-density foam. Then, we wrapped it to protect it from the resin and fiberglass. We made some runs with resin and foam. However, this resin, being exothermic, created too much heat and ended up melting the foam. That's why we wrapped it with thin aluminum foil.
