GRAVITY RACE CAR
Type of Project:
Engineering Race Competition
Date:
2021
Location:
Mexico
Rol:
SUSPENSION ENGINEER -> COORDINATOR -> DIVISION LEADER-> TEAM LEADER
The EGS20G stood as a non-motorized racing vehicle crafted exclusively for the TEC Racing – Gravity squad, tailored for participation in the "Gravity Race Car" Series held in Mexico. This racing series encompasses dual 5-kilometer competitions hosted in diverse cities across Mexico, showcasing an average elevation shift of 400 meters, propelling the vehicles to velocities reaching 100 kilometers per hour.
This car is an achievement for all of the members involved in this project because the racing car was manufactured in five continuous days. My participation in this project was mainly in the manufacture of different subsystems of the race car.
Aerodynamics:
Mainly worked with resins and fiberglass composites. I had previous experience working with these materials, but it wasn't optimal. We used to work on top of the chassis and paper, which left an irregular form in the bodywork. Now, we have learned to make support beams and fill them with expanding foam to fill the gaps between beams, and later sand them with paper sand or orbitals to make a smooth surface. Then proceed as normal, creating layers of fiberglass.
Chassis:
As mentioned previously, my tasks were to use machines and read technical drawings with GD&T. I used machines such as milling machines, band saws, plasma cutters, and MIG welding. Also had to get creative to create certain shapes in the rollbar, since the equipment in the laboratory we used to create this race car is very limited in terms of machinery. We had to bend tubes with our hands. To achieve this, we learned the properties of ductility and brittleness of commercial steel.
Suspension and Steering:
Learned how to make alignment jigs in SolidWorks to make the components perfectly aligned, worked mainly with the lathe machine and MIG welding, selected which ball bearings to use. I learned what bearing to choose thanks to a course I had to take with a sponsor of the racing team.
